Antique English White Ironstone Pitcher by Alfred Meakin
Antique English White Ironstone Pitcher by Alfred Meakin
A handsome late-19th-century English white ironstone pitcher by Alfred Meakin, one of Staffordshire’s well-known makers of ironstone and semi-porcelain wares, with wheat, rose and ribs.
This substantial pitcher features a generously rounded body, tall sweeping handle, flared pouring spout, and beautifully molded relief decoration with wheat, floral, and foliate detailing. The crisp white glaze keeps the piece wonderfully versatile while the raised pattern gives it the decorative presence associated with Victorian ironstone.
Dating to approximately 1891–1897, the underside bears the early Royal Ironstone China / Alfred Meakin / England mark used before the company’s later “Ltd.” designation.
Originally made as part of a wash set, today it works beautifully as a large vase for hydrangeas, branches, or garden flowers, or simply displayed on a sideboard, kitchen table, or open shelving among other collected whiteware.
