Holly Ann Friesen

Collection: Holly Ann Friesen

Holly Ann Friesen is a Canadian painter whose work explores the emotional and visual essence of the landscape through abstraction. Based in Kenora, Ontario, she draws ongoing inspiration from the forests, waterways, and expansive terrain of Northwestern Ontario, translating these environments into compositions that balance memory, light, and form.

Friesen’s work begins with the familiar but moves beyond direct representation, using color, shape, and negative space to create images that are both recognizable and reimagined. Her paintings invite the viewer to look more deeply—encouraging a shift from simply seeing a landscape to experiencing it more fully.

Before turning to painting full-time, Friesen worked as a scientific researcher in genetics and plant breeding, an experience that continues to inform her thoughtful and analytical approach to composition and process.   Working primarily in acrylic, she builds layered surfaces that explore light, perspective, and the interplay between structure and spontaneity.

Her work is exhibited widely across Canada and held in private and corporate collections internationally. Through her evolving practice, Friesen creates paintings that feel both grounded in place and open to interpretation—offering a contemporary perspective on the landscape that is at once immersive and contemplative.
