Collection: George Van Hook
George Van Hook is a painter rooted in both the American and European traditions of representational art. Influenced early by the Pennsylvania Impressionists and the Brandywine School, his work reflects a deep appreciation for landscape, light, and craftsmanship.
After studying and painting extensively in Europe, including time in Paris and at the Louvre, Van Hook returned to the United States where he continues to work primarily en plein air. Now based in Cambridge, New York, he draws ongoing inspiration from the landscapes of the Northeast, particularly coastal Maine and the Hudson Valley.
His paintings balance structure and atmosphere—combining strong draftsmanship with a sensitivity to color and light. The result is work that feels both timeless and immediate, grounded in tradition yet distinctly personal.
